The Double Ten Day Holiday in China

Double Ten Day (é›™å  Ã§ ¯â‚¬) is celebrated yearly on October 10. Double Ten Day is the anniversary of the Wuchang Uprising (æ ­ ¦Ã¦ËœÅ'è µ ·Ã§ ¾ ©), a revolt that led to a declaration of independence from the central government by Wuchang and several other provinces in China in 1911. The Wuchang Uprising led to the Xinhai Revolution (è ¾â€ºÃ¤ º ¥Ã©  ©Ã¥â€˜ ½) in which revolutionary forces overthrew the Qing Dynasty, ending more than 2,000 years of dynastic rule in China and ushering in the Republican Era (1911 to 1949). The revolutionaries were upset over government corruption, the encroachment of foreign countries into China, and resentment over Manchu rule over Han Chinese. The Xinhai Revolution ended with Emperor Puyi being ousted from the Forbidden City in 1912. The Xinhai Revolution led to the establishment of the Republic of China (ROC) in January 1912. After World War II, The ROC government lost control of the Chinese mainland to the Chinese Communist Party in the Chinese Civil War (1946 to 1950). In 1949, the ROC government retreated to Taiwan, where its constitution has remained in force to the present day. Who Celebrates Double Ten Day Nearly all Taiwanese have the day off from work on Double Ten Day in Taiwan. In mainland China, Double Ten Day is referred to as the Anniversary of the Wuchang Uprising (æ ­ ¦Ã¦ËœÅ'è µ ·Ã¤ ¹â€°Ã§ º ªÃ¥ ¿ µÃ¦â€" ¥) and memorial celebrations are often held. In Hong Kong, small parades and celebrations are held though they have not been as lavish since the transfer of Hong Kong’s sovereignty from the United Kingdom to China on July 1, 1997. Overseas Chinese living in cities with large Chinatowns also host Double Ten Day parades. How People Celebrate Double Ten Day in Taiwan In Taiwan, Double Ten Day begins with a flag-raising ceremony in front of the Presidential Building. After the flag is raised, the National Anthem of the Republic of China is sung. A parade from the Presidential Building to the Sun Yat-sen Memorial is held. The parade used to be a military parade but now government and civic organizations are included. Afterward, Taiwan’s president gives a speech. The day concludes with fireworks.

Genna Stott Mrs. Weekman Honors English II- 6 April 29, 2016 Poverty in America Imagine yourself trapped inside a storm that never seems to end. Where do you go? Who do you turn to for help? Poverty is often described as an endless cycle, struggled with by many, and something parents strive to withhold from their children. In 2014, about 47 million people lived in poverty in the United States (Poverty 1). This means 15 percent of America lives in a constant state of need (Poverty 1). These people have become resented by society and caring for them is viewed as an annoyance. In a country recognized as one of the wealthiest in the world, no one’s needs should be ignored, and†¦show more content†¦On the other side of the country, in California, Michelle Carter strains to take care of her 3 boys. Michelle uses the few food stamps she is given to provide dinner for her boys, but relies on their school to supply them with breakfast and lunch (Facing). The number of families like Desiree’s and Michelle’s r eaches into the hundred thousands, but some Americans do not even know they exist. If the state of hardship continues for long enough, it can take a toll on the mental health of the individual. Some families have to decide if they will get help for the mental condition of their child or if they will pay rent (Joey). In a poem about mental health and poverty, Neil Hilborn speaks about one of his childhood friends, â€Å" We both had parents who believed us when we said we weren t ok, but mine could afford to do something about it.† A young mother’s daughter struggles with a mental disorder and in order to get her help the mother has to use government money. The problem with this government assistance is that once the recipient of the money gets a job, the money stops being provided (Fessler 3). Studies have shown that, â€Å"suicide and mental illness rates are directly related to poverty and unemployment rates† (Poverty). In recent years, 6.6 percent of people b elow the poverty line have a serious mental illness and the number of those people is increasing (Levine 4). Hamlet Comment on Humanity Essay The Elizabethan play The Tragedy of Hamlet Prince of Denmark is one of William Shakespeares most popular works. One of the possible reasons for this plays popularity is the way Shakespeare uses the character Hamlet to exemplify the complex workings of the human mind. The approach taken by Shakespeare in Hamlet has generated countless different interpretations of meaning, but it is through Hamlets struggle to confront his internal dilemma, deciding when to revenge his fathers death, that the reader becomes aware of one of the more common interpretations in Hamlet; the idea that Shakespeare is attempting to comment on the influence that ones state of mind can have on the decisions they make in life. As the play unfolds, Shakespeare uses the encounters that Hamlet must face to demonstrate the effect that ones perspective can have on the way the mind works. In his book Some Shakespeare Themes An Approach to Hamlet, L. C. Knight takes notice of Shakespeares use of these encounters to journey into the workings of the human mind when he writes: What we have in Hamlet.is the exploration and implicit criticism of a particular state of mind or consciousness.In Hamlet, Shakespeare uses a series of encounters to reveal the complex state of the human mind, made up of reason, emotion, and attitude towards the self, to allow the reader to make a judgment or form an opinion about fundamental aspects of human life. (192) Shakespeare sets the stage for Hamlets internal dilemma in Act 1, Scene 5 of Hamlet when the ghost of Hamlets father appears and calls upon Hamlet to revenge his foul and most unnatural murder (1.5. 24). It is from this point forward that Hamlet must struggle with the dilemma of whether or not to kill Claudius, his uncle, and if so when to actually do it. As the play progresses, Hamlet does not seek his revenge when the opportunity presents itself, and it is the reasoning that Hamlet uses to justify his delay that becomes paramount to the readers understanding of the effect that Hamlets mental perspective has on his situation. In order to fully understand how Hamlets perspective plays an important role in this play, the reader must attempt to answer the fundamental question: Why does Hamlet procrastinate in taking revenge on Claudius? Although the answer to this question is at best somewhat complicated, Mark W. Scott attempts to offer some possible explanations for Hamlets delay in his book, Shakespeare for Students: Critics who find the cause of Hamlets delay in his internal meditations typically view the prince as a man of great moral integrity who is forced to commit an act which goes against his deepest principles. On numerous occasions, the prince tries to make sense of his moral dilemma through personal meditations, which Shakespeare presents as soliloquies. Another perspective of Hamlets internal struggle suggests that the prince has become so disenchanted with life since his fathers death that he has neither the desire nor the will to exact revenge. (74) Mr. Scott points out morality and disenchantment, both of which belong solely to an individuals own conscious, as two potential causes of Hamlets procrastination, and therefore he offers support to the idea that Shakespeare is placing important emphasis on the role of individual perspective in this play. The importance that Mr. Scotts comment places on Hamlets use of personal meditations to make sense of his moral dilemma (74), also helps to support L.C. Knights contention that Shakespeare is attempting to use these dilemmas to illustrate the inner workings of the human mind. In Hamlet, Shakespeare gives the reader an opportunity to evaluate the way the title character handles a very complicated dilemma and the problems that are generated because of it. These problems that face Hamlet are perhaps best viewed as overstatements of the very types of problems that all people must face as they live their lives each day. The magnitude of these everyday problems are almost always a matter of individual perspective. Each person will perceive a given situation based on his own state of mind.
